The Sparkly and Its Home is an Interactive IoT (Internet of Things) system that simplifies the hardly comprehensible environmental recovery data as cute figure’s activity, motion graphics and animations. Environmental pollution is an issue for every country nowadays. To raise and pass on environmental awareness has become an urgent priority. We design a figure with the shape of a firefly and an interactive landscape information display system to achieve this goal.

Why did you make it?
Environmental pollution is an issue for every country nowadays. To raise and pass on environmental awareness has become an urgent priority. This project sets on a polluted river in southern Taiwan, the DienBao River. We design an IoT system that simplifies the hardly comprehensible environmental recovery data to easy-to-understand visual language. Fireflies can be a significant ecological indicator itself; the existence of them relatively stands for clean water and healthy ecological environment. After improving the water and environment of DienBao river, we set fireflies as our indicator reminding the users whether they can go to DienBao river to watch the restoration of the fireflies or not, furthermore to promote sustainable water resources and the importance of ecological environment protection.
How did you make it?
“The Sparkly and its Home” with two main components. The first part is a figure with the shape of a firefly called “Sparkly.” Sparkly is an IoT device, with unique modeling, which connects to the periodic water detection database from a university which running a research program of purifying the water and rehabilitate the fireflies in DienBao River. The light at the bottom of the device corresponds to the daily water quality data. Sparkly is also connected to the Central Weather Bureau website in order to capture the local moisture. If the moisture is suitable for fireflies, the wings of the device will vibrate as a flying condition. The second part is an interactive landscape information display system, which contains a 3D model of the landscape near the Dianbao River Basin, presented in the form of a white FRP model. Additionally, we produced an animation of the seasonal changes in the river basin. There is a projector installed above the model, and the animation, as well as the environmental data, was projected onto the landscape model. We make eight RFID modules as Sparkly’s “home,” place it on the location of the corresponding attraction spot on the landscape model. If the user places Sparkly on the top of the RFID module, the information content corresponding to the location will instantly project onto the landscape model.
