Description

What is the purpose of 3D DEKO PROJECT? A personal project that uses fab to promote the succession of Awa Ningyo Joruri to the next generation. I established a support system and donation cycle for the preservation and succession of Awa Ningyo Joruri and Deko artisans. I am a 3D modeler having no traditional background, but I spent two years making the Awa Deko puppets while communicating with the contemporary master craftsman, Yoichiro Amari. We spent plenty of time communicating in order to build a relationship of mutual trust with the craftsmen and organizations, and to help them understand our intent to "leverage new digital tools like 3D printing and fab to co-exist with, not undervalue, the traditional culture". Production through direct communication with the craftsmen was an essential part of this project. 仕様 ナイロン3Dプリント 制作年 2019年 website https://3ddeko.shop/

What did you create?

I launched the project "3DDEKO" to create complete 3D printed reproductions of Awa Ningyo Joruri puppets and shift the tacit knowledge of puppet making to something more digital.I started out with making a So-kyoku puppet that works with the most complicated mechanism, and received a positive evaluation from a Deko artisan.Utilizing the above assets, I established a support system and donation cycle for the preservation and succession of Awa Ningyo Joruri and Deko artisans (for details, refer to the description of special prizes).I am a 3D modeler having no traditional background, but I spent two years making the Awa Deko puppets while communicating with the contemporary master craftsman, Yoichiro Amari. We spent plenty of time communicating in order to build a relationship of mutual trust with the craftsmen and organizations, and to help them understand our intent to "leverage new digital tools like 3D printing and fab to co-exist with, not undervalue, the traditional culture". Why did you make it?

Why is it so necessary to preserve and carry on the culture? What is it worth?I found an answer to this through my activity as a Japanese drum player of the Awa Odori Union in Tokushima. It was when the local union performed a dance show at the nursing home for the elderly during the summer holidays. Some people were moved to tears and tried to dance with us.I realized and was deeply impressed by the fact that "for them, Awa Odori and its rhythms are remembered as a scene of great thrills and joy." This experience led me to think of "what humans really need before death" and that it must be "memories of beautiful scenes". I thought that bring the idea to life would give real value to culture. The elaborate puppet making of Awa Ningyo Joruri is one of the world's leading puppet cultures, but the lack of successors has always been the challenge. Solving this problem is not only beneficial for the children's future, but is also a tribute to the older generations who have been responsible for the culture. And of course, it will be an important concept for our generation as we get older.

How did you make it?

This was realized through repetitive meetings and negotiations with related parties.●About 3D printed puppetsUsing the 3D modeling technology, puppets are scanned in 3D to reproduce the beautiful curved surfaces traditionally created by the hands of craftsmen. The printed parts were put together in a kit, the website for the project was launched, and the products were put on sale. The modeling data is used for web3d for the description of the internal structure, while fab and 3D techniques are used to share implicit knowledge of how traditional crafts are supposed to be.●About the donation systemThe idea is to take advantage of the problem of 3D printing reproduction, which many artisans are concerned about.Borrow a real puppet - produce a 3D printed puppet as part of the 3DDEKO project - sell exclusively to the education industry or research institutes - donate 20% of the retail price to the organization responsible for the cultural preservation and succession activities of Awa Ningyo Joruri.●About the 3D printed dolls educational programConducted at an elementary school located in an underpopulated area. By replicating expensive products, children can actually experience them.
